How to Prepare for the Coronavirus

How to Prepare for the CoronavirusU.S. health officials warned on Tuesday that the coronavirus is likely to spread in communities in the United States. They urged individuals to get themselves and their families ready. But what can you do?Infectious disease experts stressed that people should not panic and offered practical advice."The mantra is, "Keep calm and carry on," said Dr. Marguerite Neill, an infectious disease expert at Brown University. And use common sense, experts said."If you see someone on a bus who is coughing, move away," said Dr. Stanley Perlman, an infectious disease and coronavirus expert at the University of Iowa.Stay home from work if you are sick.Wash your hands frequently, said Dr. Trish Perl, an infectious disease specialist at UT Southwestern Medical Center. "It's not super sexy but it works," she said. With SARS, also a coronavirus, but one that is much deadlier, hand washing reduced the risk of transmission by 30-50%, she said.Of course, you should cough into your elbow and dispose of tissues in a wastebasket after you blow your nose. You should keep surfaces in your home clean. Alcohol is a good disinfectant for coronaviruses, Perl added. It would be sensible to have a good supply of food staples and necessary medications."Don't wait until the last minute to refill your prescriptions," Neill said. "You want to comfortably have at least a 30-day supply."With household supplies, she said, make sure you have essentials on hand, like laundry detergent and, if you have small children, diapers, perhaps enough for a month. She also suggested finding the website for your local health department so you will have a reliable source of news.Infectious disease specialists strongly recommended flu vaccines and, for older people, the vaccine against pneumococcal pneumonia, although, they added, neither influenza nor the bacterial pneumonia seem to affect a person's risk of getting a coronavirus infection or becoming seriously ill. But it is possible that the coronavirus, by injuring lung cells, can make it easier for pneumonia to take hold, Perl said. Avoiding the flu also means you won't take up the resources of a hospital and the time of health care workers in the event of a coronavirus outbreak.Parents might want to contact their child's school system and find out how plans for early dismissals or online instruction would be implemented, should they be necessary. And people with elderly parents or relatives should plan for a support system in case they fall ill. This article originally appeared in The New York Times.(C) 2020 The New York Times Company

Buttigieg: Democrats will lose Congress if nominee is 'explaining the bright side of the Castro regime'

Buttigieg: Democrats will lose Congress if nominee is 'explaining the bright side of the Castro regime'The recent comments made by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) about Cuba and its former leader Fidel Castro were bound to come up during Tuesday's Democratic primary debate in Charleston, South Carolina. When the topic eventually made its way into the chaos, Sanders' fellow candidates zeroed in on his past praise for certain aspects of the Cuban government, such as its literary program and health care system. Sanders once again clarified he was merely pointing a few good things about the Castro regime, which he describes as otherwise authoritarian. But that wasn't good enough for his competitors.Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, for example, said such comments could have consequences for Democrats down the line, suggesting the party could lose House and Senate races because of them. "We're not going to win these critical, critical House and Senate races if people in those races have to explain why the nominee of the Democratic Party is telling people to look at the bright side of the Castro regime," Buttigieg said.Sanders once again argued he has routinely condemned authoritarianism before pointing out that the U.S. government supports Saudi Arabia despite its human rights violations.More stories from theweek.com Watch Elizabeth Warren tell a Sanders supporter that Bernie helped write the delegate rules he now opposes Harvard scientist predicts coronavirus will infect up to 70 percent of humanity Israel is the first country to warn its citizens not to travel abroad over coronavirus fears

CDC: California coronavirus case may be 1st in U.S. without link to traveling abroad

CDC: California coronavirus case may be 1st in U.S. without link to traveling abroadThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Wednesday night that a person in California who tested positive for coronavirus may be the first case of community spread in the United States. This person did not recently travel out of the country or come into contact with anyone infected with the coronavirus, known as COVID-19. The case was "detected through the U.S. public health system," the CDC said, and "picked up by astute clinicians." The CDC said this could be an "instance of community spread of COVID-19," which means the source of infection is unknown, but also acknowledged that "the patient may have been exposed to a returned traveler who was infected."Lawrence Gostin, director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law, told the Los Angeles Times this is "the first signal that we could be having silent transmission in the community. It probably means there are many more cases out there and it probably means this individual has infected others and now it's a race to try to find out who that person has infected." There are 60 cases of COVID-19 in the United States.More stories from theweek.com What it's like to be in Venice during coronavirus lockdown Trump freaks out about all the wrong things Bloomberg campaign reportedly trying to recruit Andrew Yang

New US Trailer for 'Robert the Bruce' Film Starring Angus Macfadyen

Robert the Bruce Trailer

"Scotland is clutched in the grip of a mighty hand… Now, we'll set her free!" Screen Media Films has just released another official US trailer for the Scottish historical action drama Robert the Bruce, made by Australian director Richard Gray (of Mine Games, Blinder, The Lookalike, Broken Ghost). Robert the Bruce is a hard-hitting historical epic covering the turbulent time after William Wallace's victories depicted in Braveheart. This originally premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year - which is when we featured the first UK trailer. Angus Macfadyen stars (playing the same role he played in Braveheart), joined by a big cast with Jared Harris, Zach McGowan, Daniel Portman, Emma Kenney, Melora Walters, Anna Hutchison, Talitha Eliana Bateman, Patrick Fugit, Gabriel Bateman, and Kevin McNally. The film also features original music from Scottish national treasure Lulu. This looks like it might be good, or might very boring, and they're definitely playing off of "Game of Thrones" being over. Check it out below.

Here's the official US trailer (+ new poster) for Richard Gray's Robert the Bruce, direct from YouTube:

Robert the Bruce Poster

You can still watch the first full UK trailer for Gray's Robert the Bruce film here, to see even more footage.

Scotland 1306, Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen) crowns himself King and takes the ambition of Scotland’s freedom as his own. But he cannot overcome England’s power: defeated again and again, his army is scattered and Scotland’s nobility abandons him. Hunted, with a price on his head, he finds himself alone and wounded. The cause of freedom seems lost once more. Hidden secretly in a secluded croft of a clan pledged to England, and close to death Robert is nursed back to life by a young widow and her orphaned children. His determination to do what is right, regardless of the cost, reinvigorates his passion to rise again. But it’s not revenge he desires. It’s freedom. Now. Robert the Bruce is directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Gray, director of the films Summer Coda, Mine Games, Blinder, The Lookalike, Sugar Mountain, and Broken Ghost previously. The screenplay is by Eric Belgau and Angus Macfadyen. Screen Media will release Robert the Bruce in select US theaters starting April 24th, plus an event on April 16th.

Official Trailer for Ensemble Relationships Comedy Film 'Almost Love'

Almost Love Trailer

"It's all so confusing…!" Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie ensemble comedy titled Almost Love, a film about romance in the smartphone era. Also known as Sell By, which is the title the film is using for the UK release. This originally premiered at the Toronto Inside Out Film Festival, and also played at numerous LGBTQ festivals including Outfest, Out on Film Festival, and a few others. Adam and Marklin's 5-year relationship has gone from a passionate flame to a simmer, forcing them to reconcile with each other's shortcomings while their friends endlessly search for/deal with love in New York City. The film marks the directorial debut of actor Mike Doyle, and stars Scott Evans, Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, Colin Donnell, Zoe Chao, Christopher Gray, John Doman, Patricia Clarkson, and Kate Walsh. This looks a bit cheesy and cliche, no surprise, mixed with some modern charm and humor. Enjoy.

Here's the first official trailer for Mike Doyle's Almost Love, direct from Vertical's YouTube:

Almost Love Film

A romantic comedy about a group of friends navigating love, life, and relationships as they reach the mid-point. At the heart of the story is Adam (Scott Evans), a talented painter now stuck ghost painting for successful contemporary artist, Ravella Brewer (Patricia Clarkson). He and Marklin (Augustus Prew) are at the five-year mark of their relationship. They don't have kids, they're not married, and are face to face with the existential question “Is that all there is?” Their friend circle is confronting the same question in a whole host of ways: Elizabeth (Kate Walsh), Adam’s best friend, is at the 15 year mark of her marriage, ready to bail when she discovers her husband’s inappropriate text relationship with a younger woman; friend Cammy (Michelle Buteau) is dating Henry (Colin Donnell), but they never leave the house; Haley (Zoe Chao) is trying to figure out if her feelings for Scott James (Christopher Gray) are maternal or something more. Everyone’s a bit of a mess, but at the same time eternally optimistic at finding new ways to make things work. Almost Love is both written & directed by actor / filmmaker Mike Doyle, making his feature directorial debut after a few shorts previously. This premiered at the Toronto Inside Out Film Fest last year. Vertical Ent. opens Almost Love in select US theaters + on VOD starting April 3rd coming soon.
