NBA playoffs: Jokic leads Nuggets over Blazers as 76ers strike back against Raptors

  • Denver take series opener against Portland 121-113
  • Philadelphia level series with Toronto at 1-1

Nikola Jokic scored 37 points and the Denver Nuggets withstood Damian Lillard’s 39-point game in a 121-113 win over the Trail Blazers in the opener of their second-round playoff series on Monday night.

Lillard, who struck for 50 points, including a 37-footer at the buzzer to oust Oklahoma City in five games in the previous round, missed eight of 12 three-point attempts and Gary Harris blocked his three from behind in the closing minute to keep the Trail Blazers from closing in. Jamal Murray added 23 points for Denver, who were making their first appearance in the second round in a decade, and Paul Millsap scored 19.

Will the Canadian Premier League turn the country into a football power?

Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver compete in MLS, but an exclusively Canadian professional league is hoping to boost the national team

Just a few years ago, young Canadian soccer players like Ryan Telfer and Kadell Thomas had little shot at professional careers. Without a professional domestic league solely based in Canada players entered their 20s with a sense of uncertainty: despite having the talent to progress into academies, colleges and semi-pro leagues, they would either be forced to play abroad – unless they made it to the handful of Canadian MLS teams – or quit the game altogether. “There are so few options,” said Telfer in 2018.

But this weekend, Telfer and Thomas entered the annals of Canadian soccer history. And more importantly, they now have a pathway to sustained success. On a windy Saturday afternoon in front of 17,611 spectators at Hamilton’s Tim Horton’s Field, Telfer and Thomas each scored in an entertaining 1-1 draw between York 9 FC and Hamilton’s Forge FC in the first ever Canadian Premier League match. The seven-team league has been in the works for more than five years now and is sanctioned by Canada’s governing soccer association as the country’s top-tier league. The league has hopes to expand and eventually develop a tiered system with promotion and relegation.

Radio host Mike Francesca questions character of Giants pick who was shot

  • Corey Ballentine’s teammate was killed in Topeka shooting
  • Francesca appears more concerned about Giants’ reputation

Prominent sports radio host Mike Francesca appears to have blamed New York Giants draft pick Corey Ballentine for a shooting in which he was injured and his college teammate Dwane Simmons was killed over the weekend.

Simmons’s family say police told them the two players were about to leave a party early on Sunday near their college, Washburn University, when a vehicle pulled up to them. They talked to people in the car before shots were fired and Simmons was killed. He was 23. Police in Topeka, Kansas, have not suggested Simmons or Ballentine were culpable for the incident.

Workers barely benefited from Trump’s sweeping tax cut, investigation shows

Big companies drove the 2017 Tax and Jobs Act, but did not commit to any specific wage hikes, the Center for Public Integrity found

Big companies drove Donald Trump’s tax cut law but refused to commit to any specific wage hikes for workers, despite repeated White House promises it would help employees, an investigation shows.
