Turkey presses Saudi to say who sent Khashoggi killers: Erdogan
Saudi prosecutor Saud Al Mojeb held talks with Istanbul's prosecutor on Monday and Tuesday about Khashoggi's death in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, which has escalated into a crisis for the world's top oil exporter. Riyadh at first denied any knowledge of, or role in, his disappearance four weeks ago but Mojeb has contradicted those statements, saying the killing of Khashoggi, a critic of de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was premeditated. The case has put into focus the West's close relationship with Saudi Arabia - a major arms buyer and lynchpin of Washington's regional plans to contain Iran - given the widespread scepticism over its initial response.

Global wildlife populations fall 60 per cent as WWF declares state of emergency for natural world
Conservationists have issued a demand for urgent international action after a major report uncovered an unprecedented crisis in nature that threatens to devastate the world economy and imperil humanity itself. Only a global pact on the scale of the Paris Agreement on climate change will save the natural world from irreversible collapse, the World Wide Fund for Nature said after publishing a report showing a cataclysmic decline in global wildlife populations. Global vertebrate populations have fallen by 60 per cent since 1970 as human activity destroys their natural habitats in grasslands, forests, waterways and oceans, the organisation said. Until the turn of the 20th century, humanity’s consumption of the world’s natural resources was smaller than Earth’s ability to replenish itself. But over the past 50 years expanding agricultural activity and the over-exploitation of natural resources to feed a growing world population, particularly its booming middle class, has pushed many ecosystems to the brink of collapse. The Cerrado, a vast tropical savanna ecoregion of Brazil, is being cleared for soy monoculture Credit: Adriano Gambarni/ PA “Humans are living beyond the planet’s means and wiping out life on earth in the process,” the report warns. From the savannahs of Africa to the rain forests of South America and oceans across the world, few wildlife populations have been spared. While great attention has been given to the impact of poaching on elephants and rhinos in Africa, the story has been more dismal in Latin America and the Caribbean, where 89 percent of indigenous mammals like the jaguar and anteater have been wiped out. Statistics are just as grim in the world’s rivers, lakes and seas. More than 80 per cent of freshwater populations has vanished, with freshwater fish accounting for a higher rate of extinction than any other vertebrate. Since 1950 nearly 6bn tonnes of fish and other seafood have been removed from the world’s oceans. Employees move freshly caught fish at a factory in the Angolan coastal city of Benguela Credit: AFP For surviving populations the impact of human activity is also stark: some 90 per cent of the world’s seabirds have plastic in their stomach, compared to just 5 per cent in 1960. Plastic pollution now stretches across the seas of the earth, even reaching the bottom of the Marianas Trench in the western Pacific, the deepest natural point in the world. With just a quarter of the planet’s land now free from human impact, the space bird, reptile and mammal populations' need to recover is growing ever more limited. “We are the first generation to know we are destroying our planet and the last that can do anything about it,” said Tanya Steele, chief executive of the WWF. “The collapse of global wildlife populations is a warning sign that nature is dying." As tragic as the collapse of wildlife populations is, the impact of habitat loss will have a profound impact on human wellbeing, conservationists say. Man’s encroachment on nature threatens agriculture itself, because crops pollinated by animals account for 35 per cent of global food production, while habitat loss means that the soil for crops to grow is not being replenished with nutrients. Under threat | The 19 species on the World Wildlife Fund's critically endangered list The loss of South American rainforests has reduced rainfall thousands of miles away, also imperilling crop production. As many as 70,000 species of plants are used commercially or in medicine, posing a danger to efforts to fight disease and protect industry. Yet the issue, conservationists say, is not being taken as seriously as climate change — even though protecting nature can help mitigate the impact of global warming — which is why it is essential for big business and government to come together to find a solution to the crisis. “The statistics are scary, but all hope is not lost,” said Ken Norris, director of science at the Zoological Society of London, which collaborated on the report. “We have an opportunity to design a new way forward that allows us to coexist sustainably with the wildlife we depend on.”

UN rights chief wants 'international experts' to help probe Khashoggi hit
The UN rights chief called Tuesday for "international experts" to help investigate the murder of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, and called on Riyadh to reveal the whereabouts of his body. "For an investigation to be carried out free of any appearance of political considerations, the involvement of international experts, with full access to evidence and witnesses, would be highly desirable," Michelle Bachelet said in a statement. Khashoggi, a 59-year-old Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor, was killed after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain paperwork ahead of his upcoming wedding.

Democrats hope Latino voters will help them win. Don't count on it | Ruy Teixeira
Hispanic voters are not a magic elixir for the Democratic party. They need to be inspired to get to the polls first
Many people assume that Latinos will play a pivotal role in an expected wave of Democratic victories this fall, especially given Donald Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric toward Latino immigrants. But all is not as it seems.
Latinos are now America’s largest minority group, surpassing black people as a percentage of the population, and they tend to vote Democratic, at a rate of about 2:1. While they will certainly be helpful to the Democrats in this election, several factors mean they may not play as big a role as many Democrats hope.

Brazil’s left needs to admit its errors if it is to combat Bolsonaro | MaurÃcio Santoro
For the first time since the return of democracy in 1985, Brazilians have elected a far-right candidate as president of the republic. The former army captain, veteran congressman and authoritarian Jair Bolsonaro is Brazil’s version of a now-familiar global phenomenon: political leaders who win office by attacking liberal values, targeting minorities and channelling nostalgia for a time when the “fatherland” was great. Bolsonaro is the most radical of the new breed; he openly speaks in defence of dictatorship and torture, and the killing or banishment of his opponents. Not long ago Brazil was hailed as a rising power, with progressive governments. What happened? And what can we expect for our democracy?
It’s vital that we don’t stigmatise Bolsonaro’s supporters as crazy or stupid. Opinion polls show that most voters supported Bolsonaro because they want huge changes to Brazil’s political system, not because they agree with his more radical remarks. The rise of Bolsonaro is the result of five years of deep political and economic crisis in Brazil; the worst recession since the return of democracy; and corruption scandals embroiling the most important parties. Crime has become rampant, with more than 60,000 murders a year. Moderate leaders failed to address these key social demands, allowing Bolsonaro to present himself as a rebel and outsider railing against the establishment.

Klay Thompson sets NBA record for three-pointers in a game as Warriors blitz Bulls
- Thompson scores 14 three-pointers and 52 points in total
- Previous record was held by teammate Steph Curry
Klay Thompson broke teammate Stephen Curry’s NBA record for three-pointers in a game with his 14th during a brilliant offensive performance by the Golden State Warriors.
Thompson set the mark with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter on Monday night against the Chicago Bulls. He was mobbed by teammates as the players headed to the sideline for a timeout, with the Warriors leading 113-69.

Celebrity boycotts and half-time headaches: is the Super Bowl already in crisis?
Sports and advertising’s biggest night has tried to rise above politics, but has recently been dragged into the culture wars
The Super Bowl is traditionally the biggest night for sports, entertainment and advertising in the US,but in the wake of intense politicisation of the NFL, Super Bowl LIII is shaping up to be a fierce battle, not just of sporting prowess, but in the embittered culture wars.
The event is still three months away but organisers are having trouble securing big name performers, advertisers are unsure whether or not to lean into the politics now surrounding the NFL or eschew the event entirely, and politicians are seizing upon the occasion for partisan squabbling.

Cleveland Browns fire Hue Jackson after coach records three wins in 40 games
- Team won just one game in coach’s first two seasons
- Cleveland have lost 25-straight games on the road
- Offensive coordinator Todd Haley also dismissed
Hue Jackson’s failed, flawed tenure with the Cleveland Browns is over. The team fired their embattled coach on Monday, ending a run of futility nearly unmatched in NFL history. Jackson, who went 3-36-1 in two-plus seasons, was dismissed on Monday by general manager John Dorsey, a source told the Associated Press. The news was also reported by the NFL Network and ESPN.
Jackson’s firing came on day after the Browns lost their 25th straight road game, 20 of which have occurred with Jackson in charge. The Browns, who have not made the playoffs since 2002, have lost three straight games after a promising start to this season. It’s not immediately clear who will fill in for Jackson for the rest of this season. The Browns host one of the best teams in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Sunday.

Jameis Winston: from the future of the NFL to a problem on and off the field
Despite a troubled history at college, the Bucs quarterback seemed set for success in the NFL. But even his playing abilities are being questioned now
Jameis Winston hasn’t developed on the field and there’s little evidence he’s grown up off it.
When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Winston first overall out of Florida State in 2015 he was considered a remarkable if flawed talent: a risk taker with a great arm, a PhD-level understanding of the game, and the strength to make plays with defenders draped all over his body.

'Every vote should count': North Dakota ID law threatens Native Americans’ vote in key Senate race
On the tribal reservations, Republicans are accused of trying to suppress a potentially decisive bloc who tend to swing Democratic
As the blanket of morning fog evaporates over the outskirts of Fort Yates, a group of volunteers files inside a nondescript yellow building, decorated with signs that read: Standing Rock Will Vote. Everyone here knows the office. It has stood for decades and is owned by the reservation tribal government. But one thing about it has remained a mystery: its address.
Until recently that would hardly have mattered. Many properties, from government buildings to small homes, have no formal street address. Members of the Lakota Sioux tribe who live on Standing Rock, like the Native Americans on four other reservations in North Dakota, just know where people live. Most residents use PO Boxes to collect their mail. For years, thousands have used their PO Boxes when registering formal identification documents.

Kanye West designs clothing encouraging black Americans to quit Democratic party
The designs appear on merchandise for conservative commentator Candace Owens’s ‘Blexit’ campaign
Kanye West has reportedly designed a line of apparel for a conservative campaign encouraging black Americans to quit the Democratic party. Spearheaded by the YouTube star and TV pundit Candace Owens, Blexit is described as “a frequency for those who have released themselves from the political orthodoxy”.
Owens told Page Six: “Blexit is a renaissance and I am blessed to say that this logo, these colours, were created by my dear friend and fellow superhero Kanye West.” West created two designs for the Blexit merchandise range: one spells out Blexit in lettering designed to resemble human forms, the other states, “We free”.

In about-face, Republicans make fixing Obamacare central to re-election push
Republicans wanted to gut Obamacare. Now, a wave of candidates advertise support for the ‘pre-existing conditions’ provision
In a House race in rural upstate New York, a congressional district containing some counties where Trump won by more than 22%, the Republican incumbent Elise Stefanik is campaigning on what would have been unthinkable five years ago: fixing Obamacare.
Stefanik is one of a wave of Republicans who, in the final weeks of the midterms election campaign, have advertised support for Obamacare’s most popular provisions. Republicans worked for the better part of a decade to repeal the law. Now, one Obamacare policy in particular has shockingly emerged as central to the right’s re-election push: protections for “pre-existing conditions”.
